have suffered with sinus headaches for years and now wondering if i have migraines, help?
Hi
Before anything just let me say I've booked into my docs but as usual its a 2 week wait so thought i would seek a little advice in the meantime.
Ive suffered with ear and nose problems all my life and get the most awful bouts of headaches which I've always put down to sinus/ears but am now wondering….
I was diagnosed with migraines when i was a teenager but the bouts i get now are nothing like.
Mostly I wake up with a massive headache, on one side, i can't settle, tossing and turning, there is no hope of sleep it gets so bad, I'm constantly battling against vomiting while I'm like this but when i finally do vomit i feel better, but i have to empty my stomach completely before this happens which in itself is very unpleasant, I'm cold and clammy and hot at the same time! once I'm over the sickness i can usually drift off into sleep for a while even though the pain is usually still bad its not like before.im just at the tail end of one of these bouts and i can say for sure that smell is an issue, more so than light, I'm smelling intense smells and food makes me nauseous as well. i could sleep for britian at the moment i feel so tired but I'm also not sleepy ifykwim.
Does anyone think this is a migraine or could it be my ears?
many thanks for any advice coming.

That's a difficult one... Do you find any relief with painkillers and suchlike? I'm just thinking, do you find any relief with decongestants etc? If not, I'd suspect migraine. Is the pain always on the same side? If so, again it makes me err towards migraine.
Another possibility would be TMJ issues, ie the jaw, rather than the ear. I have both those sorts of head pain and migraines, and they are virtually identical in terms of the level of pain sometimes (in me they are on different sides of my head).

There's a useful description of Sinus migraine over at migraine.com where they state "Forty-two percent of patients with migraines are incorrectly diagnosed by a doctor with sinus headache". Perhaps you fall into that category. The full article can be found here
