Now that kids are back in school, there is one thing doctors at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center can be sure of: an increasing number of medical complaints, often about headaches.
Children and adolescents can suffer from different kinds of headaches, but they miss 130,000 school days every two weeks due to migraines, according to a National Health Interview Survey.
Here are some facts about migraines and tips on what to do about them:
Migraines affect more than 6 million children and adolescents in the United States, with an annual economic impact of $36 billion, according to the American Medical Association.
Pediatric migraine is one of the five most prevalent childhood disorders in the United States.
Migraines not only have an impact on school absenteeism but also on school performance. The first few months of the school year tend to be worse, so children can easily get behind.
