When is it time to start taking preventative medication?
Preventative medication can only be prescribed by your doctor. If you are getting more than 4 migraines a month, you may need to take a preventative medication.
They will hopefully, reduce the frequency and/or severity. However, please note, preventative treatments do not eliminate headaches entirely, so you may need to take a triptan as well.
The other downside is that they take a while to work to their full potential, expect to be on them for 3 - 6 months.
The side effects of these medications vary and can be hard to handily at times.
Preventative medication includes:
Beta Blockers
BOTOX®
Neuromodulators
Anti-depressants
Serotonin (5HT) Agonists
Calcium Channel Blockers
You should be able to find out more about these on other threads.
