I have found that works too - if I remember right its something to do with the caffeine, it helps the pain killers get into the blood stream quicker - I must say I do love a cup of coffee with a codeine

Coffee reduces death risk
By Dr. Philip S. Chua - Cebu Daily News
IN THIS column in 2005, we reported that drinking coffee regularly “reduces the risk for the development of Type II (adult onset) diabetes.” Subsequently, we have also published reports of later clinical studies that alluded to other health benefits of coffee-drinking in warding off migraine headaches, Alzheimer’s, degenerative diseases, gallstones, liver cirrhosis, and possibly cancer.
New study released by researchers at the US National Cancer Institute (part of National Institutes of Health) and American Association of Retired
Persons (AARP) says “older adults who drank coffee, caffeinated or decaffeinated, had a lower risk of death overall than others who did not drink coffee.”
This encouraging recent report went on to say “coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart

As a Fioricet user, I have to say that caffeine is hugely important! Fioricet is just codeine, acetominophen, and caffeine in one pill. If I have a mild migraine that is slow-onset, I take 2 Tylenols and drink a cup of coffee and that will sometimes prevent a major one from creeping up on me.
I adore coffee, but if I drink it after noon, it is just asking for a sleepless night. There are few decaf options in Japan - one of my pet peeves! I love the taste of coffee and sometimes want nothing more than to have a cup after dinner... it helps with digestion, I think. But that's impossible, so I have my cup early in the morning if I drink any at all.

Coffee and Codeine - sounds like a great title for a book!
Re: Coffee - does it help you?
Codeine is a no no for me. I'm allergic to it. But I have a combination of aspirin paracetamol and caffeine as good as any prescribed medication for lessening migraine pain. When I can get hold of it, I take a Japanese over the counter medicine called Kerorin (ケロリン) Its a combination of those three ingredients. It comes in powder form and taste absolutely terrible, but if taken during the aura stage stops the migraine about 50% of the time.
Re: Coffee - does it help you?
I've never heard of Kerorin, but I will check it out next time I am at the drugstore. I'm surprised to hear that any Japanese medicine works, to be honest! The drugs here as so incredibly weak compared to American drugs...

It's made by the Nagai Yakuhin Company, Toyama. It's main ingredients are acetylsalicylic acid and anhydrous caffeine. It's a relatively old medicine going back to the 1920's. I understand the printing on the sachets is still the same as the original. It works for me around 50% of the time if I take it at the right time - early on in the aura phase. That's better than the success rate for caffergot.
