What are my chances
Hello
I'm a mother of 3 children. I have 1 boy and 2 girls-Their dad has hemiplegic migraines and had it for over 20 years. What are the chances of my 3 children getting it? Is there any test I can get done for my children, to see if they are the carrier.

Re: What are my chances
Hi Carrie,
I also suffer from hemiplegic migraine (I was diagnosed at the age of 7) and recently asked my consultant what would the risks be to my children if I decided to have any. As I'm a sporadic case meaning I have no family history of hemiplegic migraine he said that there was a risk that my children would suffer from migraine, I think it was 2 out of 3 but the chance of them having hemiplegic migraine was much smaller. Please don't quote me on this as I am not 100% sure of the odds as I was suffering from a severe hemiplegic migraine at the time and my memory can be totally shot! However, he did say that there are much worse things that you can pass on to your children than migraine (as awful and distressing as it is) but as he said to me research is going on all the time and new drugs are being developed so in the future for our children who suffer from migraine hopefully things won't be quite so bad.
If boys develop migraine then they are more likely to grow out of it than if girls suffer from it.
I'm not sure whether there is a genetic test available on the NHS especially as all the genes for hemiplegic migraine are still to be found. I know that the ones they have been located only cover 50% of the patients who sufferer with HM and they are sufferers of familial hemiplegic migraine meaning it runs in families. I was tested for these genes a few years ago but I am not a carrier of these so fall into the 50% that are still to have an identifiable gene found.
I hope this is of some help to you and if you have any further questions please feel free to ask.
Wishing you all the very best.

Re: What are my chances
Carrie - I have just contacted someone I know at the NHS to ask about testing - as soon as they get back to me I will let you know. x
Re: What are my chances
Just heard back from my NHS contact - she says.
"There has recently been some research done where they have found what they believe is the gene which carries migraine making the condition genetic. Because you have migraine does not neccessarily mean that your children will have it but obviously there is an increased chance. Should your children get migraine they may get symptoms completely different to yours. Sufferers within a family group can suffer the same type of migraine but they can also all have completely different symptoms. Migraine in young children often presents abdominally but some children do get the headache and other symptoms as well. As far as we are aware there is no test available which can show if someone will suffer from migraine."
