Neurology patients betrayed Empty Neurology patients betrayed

3RD MAY 2012

The Migraine Trust is a member of the Neurological Alliance, an umbrella organisation of charities representing individuals with neurological health conditions, who are campaigning for a ‘better deal for neurology’.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is appointed by the House of Commons, recently reported that current neurology services are poorly coordinated and lack national leadership. The PAC report made a number of recommendations, but most of these have been ignored in the Government’s response to the report. The Neurological Alliance issued a press release saying neurology patients have been betrayed by the Government.

The Neurological Alliance is continuing to campaign on behalf of the 8 million children, young people and adults in England with a neurological condition. More information on the Neurological Alliance’s campaign and comments on the Government’s response to the PAC report can be found here.

The Migraine Trust is disappointed that the PAC report excluded migraine and have challenged this exclusion, but await a response from the Public Accounts Committee. The Neurological Alliance on the other hand include migraine in its work and therefore have a more inclusive campaign for a better deal for all neurological services.

We will update migraine sufferers if and when we hear back from the Public Accounts Committee. In the mean time, we’d like to make people aware of the PAC report excluding migraine, and of the Neurological Alliance’s campaign.

UPDATE 25 May 2012:

The Public Accounts Committee has responded to The Migraine Trust to inform us that the Committee based its inquiries on the findings of the National Audit Office reports and, as a result the Committee’s hearing and report reflected the focus on more complex neurological conditions. The National Audit Office study focused on neurological conditions resulting from disease and therefore excluded data for migraine as migraine was felt to be significantly different from these more complex neurological conditions in terms of the health and social care requirements.

Despite being the only neurological condition that was explicitly excluded from their report the PAC informed us that a number of the recommendations that they have made are likely to have a wider impact on neurological services, including migraine.

We are continuing to work closely with The Neurological Alliance to campaign for a better deal for neurology.

The Migraine Trust is interested to hear your thoughts on this. Comments can be made below or by emailing our Advocacy and Policy Manager.

I am very disappointed to read this - the reply shows a clear lack of understanding on the existent to which migraine can effect sufferers - its its often called a complex neurological condition....... the sad part is that even the so called experts still do not get that the difference to someone who has a migraine attack once a month for 24hrs and those of us whom are chronic and have 15+ per month is vast.... and with the new reserach showing this is more likely to be a neurological and not vascular disease then we should have been represented in this report......... the number one neurological condition for the UK and missing from this report does not give a great credence to those involved......
