Does Propranolol Reduce Racism?

Not really about migraine - but interesting that it could have this effect on people....


A small study found that people's subconscious racial bias is considerably reduced if they are taking propranolol, a heart disease drug, researchers from Oxford University wrote in the journal Psychopharmacology. The study was carried out by a team of psychologists, ethicists and psychiatrists.

Interesting. I guess that there are also drugs where an undocumented side effect is an increase in racism....

I know in my own case some meds have had a significant effect on my personality - none for the better IMHO

It is quite scary when you think about it - if a simple medication can change the way you feel and the opinions you have - it brings a whole new meaning to chemical warfare...

I wonder what it does. I mean, does it make people less responsive to others in general, or make them more tolerant in other ways.

I can think of a few people I'd like to give it to...

I am by nature gentle and very easy going. But when I was on Sandomigran I became extremely aggressive and intolerant. On Topiramate I became violent to the extent that I threw a vacuum cleaner at my wife. Scary stuff indeed.

Topiramate is a scary - the effects it has on people - it was this one I had in mind when I was thinking about this whole issue.......... I am a glass half full kind of person and find I can still smile even when things are really bad...I am very level headed and never panic..... but on this stuff I was suicidal....... which now I cannot believe I was thinking my kids would be better off with me gone...these where serious thoughts - I remember watching them play thinking I could just slip away and they would be better off........ I would cry for hours and hours - from just sitting there and weeping to big full on sobs......... day in day out ... it was my lowest point in all this... as soon as I came off the drug it all went............

This is one of the reasons why it scares me that they are going to give this to control weight............ giving it to people whom will have low self esteem to start with............ worry's me
