Hi, everyone!

I'm Sue, aged 56, and never had a migraine in my life until after my stroke in 2006. After a few months off work due to my stroke, I was then off work from 2007 - 2008 with what I was then told were a series of mini-strokes but which I wasn't told until 2009 were actually a series of hemaplegic migraines.

The symptoms I get are left-sided weakness, slurred speech and general light-headedness; when this fades away gradually I'm left with a feeling of intense tiredness and the urgent need to sleep, often for up ti three hours at a atime. This can be followed with a general feeling of light-headedness and being 'not quite with it' for up to three days in total. To an outsider it can look like I'm having another stroke but this has happened so often now that I.i don't bother to call an ambulance any more.

The ironic thing is that I never get a headache with these migraines, which puzzles a lot of people because they think that a migraine always includes a blinding headache - something I never get, ever.

I was prescribed Pizotifen tablets for these migraines and although they stopped 99.9% of the migraines they did have the unfortunate effect of piling on the pounds - as i have a weight problem anyway I decided to wean myself off the tablets when i got to a dress size 22. Since stopping the tablets I've lost over a stone in weight and if i can just grin and bear it I hope to lose between 3 and 4 stone more in weight. I suppose there are other tablets i could take, but I'm reluctant to ask my GP in case I'm given something else that piles on the weight.

Hi Sue and welcome to the forum Smile

Sorry to read you have HM Sad I too have HM, which went chronic following a stroke, so I understand where you are coming from, I also do not always get the headache. But the aura symptoms can knock me over for days as I am sure you know. Have a look at the types of aura in Useful Information - you might have more than you think Wink

How often are you getting them now? And have you been able to work out any of your triggers?

One thought have you ever tried Topamax - not everyone gets on with this as there are side effects, others find it amazing and one the side effects is weight loss Smile I lost 3stone on it and never noticed lol.

It nice to meet you and i am sure the others will be along soon to say hi.
