Plagued with Migraine Empty Plagued with Migraine

Post by hollycadman Sat Jul 30, 2011 10:28 pm

Hi all,

My name is Holly and a migraine sufferer since aged 13.

I will always remember my first migraine. 6 months after I started secondary school, walking to class with a friend and walked straight into a bin (one of those one the wall) she laughed at me for being clumsy and at that point I panicked as I could see anything out of my left eye.
The nurse wasn't going to send me home until I threw up in her office.

Fast forwards 8 years and countless prescribed medication, I've been on just about everything and nothing works. It started with one or two migraines a month, now its 6 a week with no time to recover in between (one night I awoke after having a migraine effecting my right side, to find it was happening in my left side too). Now somedays I can't even go outside - even with sunglasses its unbearable. - I have even become acustomed to just using the one arm because the other is so weak. Between the months of July - November it's difficult to go outside especially as I live in England and the weather is so tempremental!!
I had some natural healing (reiki) and it worked for a little while but I've learnt nothing is permanant.

I have been having migraines so long , I am no longer sick, just nauseaus, when I eat the feeling disappears. Which in a way is worse because at least being sick relieves pressure.

My Mom can't identify because she has a different sort to me.
My triggers are usually the weather, grapes, chocolate, one time even toothpaste and stress.

Hi Holl and welcome to the forum Smile

I am sorry you have had to suffer with this for so long and sadder to say you are not the only one - but you are amongst friends here, who will total understand how you feel. Smile and I am sure will be along shortly to welcome you.

I assume you are under a consultant headache neurologist?

Since you are having so many a week, you really should be on a preventative, what have you been on already and did any of them work, even a little ? There are lots of threads re the different treatments and medications and even alternative stuff - please have a look round and shout if you have any questions

Have you had a GONB or DHE to try and break the cycle?

You sound like you have worked out some of your triggers, however since they are still coming, you may have more - have a look at this list, is might help - https://migrainetalk.forumotion.co.uk/t330-types-of-triggers

I have only just got on top of my migraines, after 3 yrs of status migraneous and 5 yrs of being chronic (only 11 full mig days this month Smile ) I have done this mainly via Botox and would recommend that Smile - if you have not already tried it. Also magnesium, but a good quality natural one, not a synthetic one. I also had some allergy / intolerants tests done and have changed my diet and removed chemicals from my house. I have also changed my pillow and that has helped with the neck pain - I also make sure I eat all day, and sleep regular and have time for me - I meditate and that helps settle the brain - and rest rest and rest.

Finding the right management plan for you, is not going to be a 5 min job, but we will all help as much as we can.

Hi, Holl,
Welcome to the group. I'm sorry you have suffered so with your migraines. I, too, have had them since early childhood. I don't have the weakness or the blindness, though. I am sure that was terrifying as a kid.
It does sound like you need to start a preventative. I hope you find one that works. Mine are still kind of out of control, but I keep hoping that mine will be as easily managed as some people's are. On this site, there are several people who have similar migraines to yours, they will help a lot. Having somewhere to come rant, whine, and ask for advice is great.

Hi all,
thank you for sharing your experiences. No dont have a nuerologist and I was on a very low dose of anti depressants used as a blocker. Sadly those no longer work - my body becomes immune to all medication of that nature after the 2nd or 3rd time of taking it!

My Doctors work on a "get in and out" policy. I have been told theres nothing they could do for me, even when the migraine was at its worst!!
I gave up and just accepted it. Reiki/natural healing works wonders and I was migraine free for about 8 months, it was amazing so I would definately recommend it!! (ask your doctors, I'm lucky enough that my Mom and her friend are practitioners) It works on the theory of you being in a completely relaxed state and it destresses the body and mind.
Alas it is a short term salution

As you are getting so many migraines per month (15 or more per month is classed as chronic) you really should be under a headache neurologist, there is a limit to the treatments and medication as well as the knowledge that a GP has. A consultant can organise scans, DHE, GONB, Botox plus an array of meds; even some which are not licensed in this country Smile

Here is a list of NHS hospitals with neurological departments https://migrainetalk.forumotion.co.uk/t95-neurological-departments-in-nhs-hospitals

and here is a list of clinics https://migrainetalk.forumotion.co.uk/t96-migraine-clinics-in-the-uk

Just ask your GP for a referral to the closest one. It will take some time to get an appointment - but you really do need to be seen by a specialist. There is no cure for migraine BUT you can manage it better, with the right help Smile

I also mediate and that helps to reduce stress and relax the mind etc - but this is not the only thing I do.

Do let us know how you get on.

Holly,

Your GP is NOT following NICE or BASH guidelines laid down by the NHS.

There is an excellent Headache Clinic set up by Prof' Clarke [Consultant Neurologist- teaches at Bham Medical School] at City Hospital in Birmingham. I do recommend it even if you have to travel as they are very good at managing complex cases.

It does not sound like your GP knows what they are doing with preventative drugs. Anti'd's are but one option out of many. Taking 2-3 doses does not make you immune- it takes a lot longer than that to build up to a therapeutic level. There is no such thing as a preventive drug that works in one week flat most take a few weeks to build up to a level that can help. It does help if you have a GP who follows the BASH guidelines. Print out a copy to take with you.http://www.bash.org.uk/ go to the publications button and click on the 'Management guidelines' PDF.
This is what all GPs are supposed to follow and yes you can make a complaint if they do not.

Can I ask what analagesics [pain relief/triptains] your using and how often? They could be behind your repeated headaches.
