Daughter with new onset chronic migraine - ruining her life and mine - help !! Empty Daughter with new onset chronic migraine - ruining her life and mine - help !!

Help please !! My daughter who is 27 has been diagnosed 2 months ago with chronic migraine by a Headache Specialist. She had tension headaches 5 years ago, then had 2 years completely free of headaches until January 2013 when she had a depo injection & got a migraine. Things deteriorated from then on. She has been off work now for 3 months, she is cabin crew and desperate to get back to work but has headaches every single day.

The specialist put her on Propanolol - she is now on 160mg daily. She can't take any Ibuprofen type tablets because of her stomach. She was taking too much codeine to try and control the pain but saw another Neurologist who made her come off it all cold turkey which she did. She also started seeing a Chiropractor which she felt helped. She has now been off all meds except the occasional paracetamol for about 2 months and is still seeing the chiropractor but her headaches are still bordering on a 4/5 out of 10 daily and each day she is struggling.

She started 10mg of Amitriptyline when coming off the codeine and I think that helped her but she's now come off that as she can't fly on that medication.

She is desperate to get back to work. The daily headaches are getting her down and getting me down as I can't bear to see her like this. Her job is not ideal either for a person with migraine. I am scared she will never get back to work. Also her boyfriend lives in Dubai and she can't see him either until she gets back to work. We are seeing the headache specialist again Friday but I don't know if she will have any answers either.

I was wondering if anyone had tried botox because that's another thing she mentioned when my daughter was first diagnosed.

Just feel so alone in all of this. I work for a GP practice and seem to know more about migraines now than all the doctors there...... It seems no-one can help us anymore.....

thanks for any replies

Welcome to the forums

I'm not able to comment on Botox as that's something I haven't tried, and I don't know anyone here in NZ who has.

I wish I could tell you that your daughter will find a treatment that will work for her. But I can't. I can understand her desperation to get back to work, but if there is one thing she needs to learn as a chronic migraineur, it's patience. With time there's a good chance that she will find a treatment that will help her manage her migraines. Time also helps in learning what triggers her migraines and how best to avoid them.

For quite a few migraineurs weather can be a trigger. Often it is changes in barometric pressure that does it. This might be a factor to consider if she flies regularly. If migraines are going to be a feature of her life, then I think being part of a cabin crew is far less than ideal. She has to be able to escape from noise and bright lights when necessary, and I don't think that job can provide that.

I know three months off work seems a long time, and things might feel hopeless, but after having migraines for fifty years, I know that there is much to be thankful for. I have learnt to appreciate the little things in life so much more than I would have if I had been "normal". Also time can be a wonderful healer, but not always in the way you expect!

All the best for Friday's  appointment.
