Fed up and miserable!

Post by lauren.fb on Thu Jan 10, 2013 11:31 pm

Feel the need to let off some steam about consultants!

I found out at my last neurology appointment in October that the consultant I had been seeing on the nhs and privately was leaving. I had been told that I would receive a follow up appointment in December with a new consultant replacing the previous one. Having gone through the whole of December with my eye on the letter box willing an appointment to be sent I phoned up the hospital this week only to be told the new consultant isn't starting until May! The most annoying thing is that I'm now stuck in limbo waiting to be referred to a different consultant but I've had to go back to my GP to request this. I feel like I've been thrown back to square one again Sad

And to top it all off I went to the cinema Tuesday night to spend some time with my boyfriend and I've now been suffering the consequences ever since with an awful migraine!

I hope the rest of you are having a better week than I am, hopefully migraine free! Xx

I know how you feel. It seems that your health system suffers a similar problem to ours - a constant shortage of specialists. I was supposed to have a follow up with a neurologist following an EEG last May. Still waiting. Apparently the neurologist who I was supposed to see left resulting in an extended waiting list. As waiting lists are not allowed to be longer than 6 months, I was one of the unfortunate ones that was dropped off the list. As I've been graded "semi urgent" I'm unlikely to meet the criteria to get back on the list unless my condition changes dramatically or the health authority somehow gains its full quota of neurologists.

Oh poppet that is not good - even if we suggested another hospital it will take time to set up... the NHS is bad at times - posts like these should roll over... (HUGS)

What meds are you on?

I live in the U.S. I have a referral to a specialist and I could call and make an appointment right away if I wanted. And I do. But my last experience with a specialist, even though I have health insurance, left me with a bill for about $2,500. I don't have that much money so I must arrange for a payment plan. I already have several other payment plans going with several other medical providers. So I'm putting it off. I'm tired of racking up debt. There doesn't seem to be any great healthcare solution anywhere. They all ration one way or another. Having lots of money in the bank seems to be the best solution. Maybe I should try out one of those dating sites that features millionaire men. But the chances of me NOT canceling the date because of migraine are pretty slim. :)

hee hee Very Happy - but it is a pan of sorts..........

But the USA is very bad on the way its health services are provided... have you been able to anything for your self - ie work out trigger, meditate, relax, alternative treatments, supplements?

I've figured out triggers: certain foods, lack of sleep, interruption of sleep routine, missing meals, sometimes exercising, certain weather patterns, relaxing (i.e. the usual Saturday morning migraine). I've spent lots of money on acupuncture, massage, and a number of supplements. Massage either did not help or made it worse. The acupuncture did not help. None of the supplements made a difference. So far the best treatment is sleep and ice. But with chronic migraine, I get tired of sleeping my life away.

Recently I tried Cymbalta and it helped for a couple of months, but now they are back as usual. This is the usual story with any meds that helped. It only lasts for a brief time. Ahhh well. It is what it is.

I wish I could pinpoint my triggers! I have just completed the York test though so hopefully eliminating the intolerances they found will help.

In terms of meds I am currently taking propranolol. I've tried amitriptyline, venlafaxine, sodium valproate, Topiramate and Gabapentin as well as the triptans! Also tried Botox and had a session of accupuncture on Friday!

How did you do with the Botox and acupuncture? I hope they were helpful.

Laura is right about all health services being rationed in one way or another. In the US and many other countries it's the wealth of the individual that determines the services available to you, whereas in NZ and the UK, it's the combined wealth of the taxpayers.
I do know that inside our health system neurology is a poor relative compared to most other fields of medicine. At times I do get frustrated that I'm unlikely to get anything better unless a wealthy benefactor sends me to North America or Western Europe for treatment. Unfortunately I'm not so lucky as to have one, and they seem to be rather scarce. Has anyone got a spare wealthy benefactor they can lend to me for a while?

Unfortunately Botox didn't make a difference at all! It's a shame as I had high hopes for it! As for accupuncture I couldn't stand it! The needles in my head hurt a lot and then I was given a massage which was awful! Just couldn't stand to be touched on my head! But at least it's another thing crossed off my list!
