Hi from Ireland!

Hi I am new to the forum living in Ireland.
I had my first migraine at 15 since then they have gone through many stages. At first I had the visual dirstubances and vomiting. I've gone through phases of being unable to move one side of my body, fainting and fitting during a migraine. I've tried all the triptans & beta-blockers to prevent them.
The only times I haven't had migraines in the last 20 years was during my 2 pregnancies.
I've been taking Topamax for about 4 years which to some extent has worked I'd get a migraine about once a month which could be stopped with a Frovex then about once every 3 months I'd get a big migraine that there was no stopping! These would involve intense pain one side of the head and sickness, usually after 2 days of sickness to the point I couldn't keep even a sip of water down I'd land at the doctors for an injection to stop the sickness so the next day I could take painkillers. But then this year they've got much more frequent almost weekly.
So I've finally seen a neurologist (2year waiting list!) He has started me on amitriptyline as well as the topamax and seems really confident it will make a big difference. I started on 10mg and have upped it to 25mg for just over a week I take the Topamax in the morning & the Amitriptyline in the eve only side effects are a bit of dizziness & numbness in my hands but I had one migraine while on the 10mg and a migraine yesterday Really dissapointed now I had such high hopes after seeing the neurologist.
Does anyone else take this mix of tablets? Thanks for listening!!

UPDATE - Now been on 25mg Amitriptyline & Topamax for 3 weeks and have had a migraine weekly lasting 2-3days different from my previous migraines as no sickness they are now much more painful one-sided and leave me with aura for a further day. I am just coming out of latest migraine and today have numbness one side of face and my head is tender to touch. Anyone else had this? My doc doesn't know what to do with me and is trying to get next neuro appointment brought forward has given me a load of painkillers todat including valium!! Loosing hope now

I've nothing to suggest, but just didn't want to leave your thread unanswered! So sorry to hear how much you are suffering.

Doesn't sound like the drug combination is working too well for you. I must admit, I hadn't heard of them being taken together before.

Hi thanks so much for the reply its great to know there are other people out there! I get the feeling my doc doesn't really know what to do with me.
I am now pumped full of painkillers feeling quite out of it and dizzy today but at least no pain!
I am just hoping my next neuro appointment is soon at least when I left I felt like he had listened to me and that there was some hope!!

Be careful with the painkillers. I'm sure you know about rebound attacks, but just thought I'd better mention it. I was reading a book the other day that reckons we should only be using triptans twice a month. Previously I'd heard twice a week was safe.
