Hi All,

I had my 1st hemiplegic migraine on 7th November, started with mild vertigo, then tingling on left side of face which spread to full left side of body with weakness and nausea, headache came after but that was the least of my worries, went into a major panic as was alone with my 3 yr old son.
My GP diagnosed HM immediately and sent me for MRI just to confirm there was nothing sinister, all came back clear including bloods, still have an almost constant inner tremor and weakness in arms and legs which really worries me, GP is convinced this is anxiety which will naturally work its way out of my system.
He has referred me to a neurologist (just to put my mind at ease as he is convinced there is nothing wrong with me) but app not until Christmas week, my question is, is it normal to have a tremor/weakness as an after effect? If so, how long can I expect this to last? Please can someone reassure me as this is really depressing me. Please help, would really appreciate some info.

Thanks,
Cal.

I don't know how "normal" tremors/weakness that persists after the HM ends are, but I experience that at times. In my case the tremors are usually in my right hand and arm, and can start before the migraine hits and can last last for a few days afterwards. I'm not sure when the weakness starts but when the migraine is at its worst, I am significantly weaker on my entire right side (sometimes at about 50% strength). Again it can take a few days (up to a week) for my normal strength to return. Of course, when I have multiple migraines over a short time span, then the tremor and weakness can persist for several weeks.

Over time I have learnt to make adjustments. I used to be strictly right handed, but now I can do most tasks with either hand (even handwriting). I'm predominantly right handed with no migraine and about 50/50 with a migraine. Tasks that require strength are right handed on good days and left handed on bad.

AS you've had an MRI which indicated nothing bad, I don't think you need to worry too much about other possible causes. I think your GP is correct on that. But saying there is nothing wrong with you??? You have HM for goodness sake. I wouldn't categorise an HM as "nothing wrong". It can be a significant disability.
