Fluoxetine (Prozac)

Post by Whatsername on Fri Oct 19, 2012 7:03 pm

Has anyone taken this for migraine? I have been prescribed it to help with depression and I was also told it can help with migraine. I am on day 5 at the moment and I feel like I'm not quite myself, not as anxious but I can't seem to be as happy about things either. My depression comes in waves - around the time of my period it is worse so I'm not always feeling depressed. It seems to have taken away my ability to feel happy too but then it could just be the timing. I'm going to stick with it for a few more weeks as I know it takes a while to get used to it. Just wondered if anyone has had any experience of using this?

Thanks

My wife was prescribed Fluoxetine for migraines - mine not hers. Having to cope with me during my migraines was causing her to become stressed and depressed. The medication did marginally help her cope - she didn't seem to get so stressed out with me, but like you, she found it lessened all her emotions. Sort of flattened everything out. Over the month or so she was taking it, I could see the life draining out of her. It also made her constantly tired, and that is why she stopped taking it.

After coming off it, she returned to her normal self in about a week. Cranky when I'm in a migraine, but a vibrant person at other times. One thing the experience taught her is that she now has a better understanding of how I feel when I have a migraine - emotionally numb. I think that insight has helped her cope much better with me in the three months since she stopped taking Fluoxetine.

I have been prescribed several antidepressants over the past 15 years as a migraine treatment, but not Prozac. None of them were been effective and I also found they seemed to take away the joys of life I find between migraine attacks. Personally, even if they were effective, I would prefer to put up with migraines rather than be in a perpetual state of emotional emptiness/numbness.

I've taken several anti-depressants including Prozac. I did not experience the emotional flatness. But they did not help my migraines either.

We all have different body chemistry, we may not have the same experience with the same drug.
