Metallic Smell and Migraine
Hey everyone,
Well I am fighting another migraine, imagine that. In a matter of a week I have had to deal with a couple of migraines. Two of them involved a metallic smell before becoming full blown. Yesterday evening is when the second metallic smell started coming on. I do not know where the smell is coming from and why I can't get rid of it.
The migraine is not full force yet. The smell makes me sick to my stomach and makes my food smell and taste funny. The pressure building in my head is horrible. Ranks right up there with the sharp stabbing pains I have become accustom to.
Has anyone ever experienced this metallic smell? What little searching I have done I think it is an aura sign. I have never been one to get aura's prior to my migraines. Does this mean my migraines are changing or am I just getting a new type of migraine to fight?
Loads of love and support to you all.
Lissa

Re: Metallic Smell and Migraine
It is a form of aura. Some people have visual clues, yours is obviously smell. It can vary for yourself too as it's not so much about any one smell, rather sensory dysmodulation meaning your brain can't cope and is giving you 'weird' signals
I've heard of all sorts of smell based auras, some pretty strange!

Thank you.
Does it mean my migraines are changing? I have never had or been able to pinpoint any specific cause that brings on my migraines. I rarely wake up with them, they come on during the day at any given time.
This is only the second time that I have experienced this funky smell and the last time it did form into a full blown migraine that lasted 2 days.
Back in 2004-2005 I was diagnosed with chronic cluster migraines. I have had numerous CT scans and a neurologist has tried all kinds of treatments. But have had no luck resolving my issues.
Sometimes I really feel like the doctors do not care or understand. So if they can't find a cause then it is in my head and basically I get told there is nothing wrong with me. It is all very frustrating and now having this smell makes it all so much more frustrating.

Re: Metallic Smell and Migraine
Migraines often change over time. Usually for the worse. This may be transient or may become more frequent. Even though you don't wake up with migraines, it's still sensory overload. A lot of people start either pain free or with a slight headache/fogginess when they wake which progresses through the day
Of all of the patients I have seen who have had a CT scan, I have yet to see one with something in their scan
Migraine is an odd thing!!
