Exercising with Migraine Empty Exercising with Migraine

Any suggestions on how to start exercising with migraine and chronic daily headache? I exercised regularly for years: running, treadmilling (when I had access), bicycling. But my headaches have become such a daily occurrence that I am really wiped out when I get home from work. It takes everything I’ve got just to sit there and look like I’m working. I experience so much fatigue – but I know lack of activity can lead to more fatigue. I live alone and have no help with preparing meals or housecleaning. My place is a wreck and I rarely eat well. It seems most everything is falling apart. Anyway, I digress. Any suggestions on how to get start exercising when moving my head hurts?

Furthermore, I worry about people from work seeing me out running or riding my bike when I’ve left the office because of migraine. I’m worried they’ll think “How can she go home sick and be out bicycling?” But I read stuff that says to exercise anyway because in the long run it will reduce the number of migraines. But I’m afraid my managers won’t believe that “excuse” if they see me out exercising after I’ve gone home from work because of migraine. Anyone dealt with that?

I so know what you mean. I used to feel that way when I worked. Not that my house isn't that much less of a wreck now I don't.

I've never been the fittest of people, but even a day in bed with a migraine sets me back so much and the next time I walk somewhere I am totally exhausted.

My personal view is that you have to be a bit careful exercising with migraines, as it can make them worse. I think it's one of those moderation things. I certainly wouldn't think that high impact exercise is a good idea if your head is pounding anyway. There is definitely such a thing as exercise-induced migraine, so I think exercise making migraines worse is a possibility too, as well as an improvement!

I do also agree that people are likely to think the worst if they see you out exercising if you've left work early. That would be fine if they tackled you over it, as you could explain yourself, but if they just gossip and moan about it, that's not much use. Sad

I'd really like a treadmill so I can just do some very gentle exercise in the house. I don't really have room for one though. Sad Is that an option for you? Something like a treadmill or an exercise bicycle in the home so you can do a little moderate exercise in the comfort of your own home without anyone seeing?

Exercising with Migraine Empty Re: Exercising with Migraine

Maybe I should look into getting a treadmill or something for the house. I did go for a walk this evening. I'm just getting so blue. I'm unproductive at work. I don't exercise. I don't eat right - cause I can't keep up with the shopping. Very few kinds of food interests me. I live on cereal, crackers, cookies, and fruit. Meat and veggies are just completely unappealing. The doc says I may be lactose intolerant so now I don't eat dairy. My house is a mess. I can't keep dates with my friends. I'm struggling to sleep. I've been missing work for the migraines and to see the dentist. Now I think I have bladder infection. If I could fall asleep I'd like to stay asleep through July 24th - the day I go see a new neurologist. Think I'll go take a sleeping pill and go to bed. Forgive the rant. I'm just feeling overwhelmed and hopeless at the moment.

Big Hugs hun - totally understand - but agree with Sarah - while the reserach says excersice can help I am yet to meet a chronic person who says it does - I know its a big trigger for me and I been known to collapse - and at one time I was very fit and even ran for county - now I do very little the odd walk - the important thing here is to listen to your own body and when it says stop - you stop - sod the teacher at the front saying push through it!

The things I have consider are softer forms like yoga but not the silly get in a postsion that hurts and stay there - their are yoga teachers out there who work with ill people and understand... the other thing is the Wii - which I have tried - I like this as you can do it in your own home, you can set the pace and you can keep it gentle. If you like to be a bit more active and your body allows you to then the treadmill or a indoor bike is a good idea - but please do not push it - I hate to say it but the old you has gone - you need to work with the YOU you have now....and that needs some TLC...

re the other bits you mention - food - I had the same problem - no energy to cook and I hate shopping with a passion - massive trigger for me - so now I have it delivered - I am sure you must have stores over there which will do the same - but Tesco here have an on line facility where it stores what you ordered last time - so on those days when I cannot even think to do a shop online - I just hit the 'last order' button and make the odd change - at least we have food in the house Smile...

Re the diary - its worth having that tested - you can either have an allergy test done or you can see a Kinesiology - I have done both and can say the lady who did the Kinesiology found everything they did in the allergy tests and more... and she was a lot cheaper........ not only could she tell what to shop eating (as did the allergy test) she also told me what I was missing ie a lot of minerals.

Migraine is a really serious illness with a massive impact on your live - not just the pain and sickness etc - it causes so many stress issues - ie house mess, not keeping up......... I am writing a paper at the moment on the migarine curve - and have come to the conclusion that once you accept its here to stay and that the little things do not really matter life becomes more bearable......... so there is mess on the floor - what the hell... it shows the house is lived in and loved...

Big Hugs - feel better xxxxx

You poor thing. Sad Are you taking any supplements at all? With the diet you're on, you're likely to be deficient in a whole lot of nutrients that you need for migraines (let alone health generally); particularly ziinc, magnesium and vitamin b12.

Do you like eggs at all? I'm just thinking that they are very nutritious and can be made into something easily.

Thank you all. i've managed a few walks. Wii is a good thought. I need to make a plan for eating. Hard boil a bunch of eggs and keep them in the fridge. I do take supplements: multi-vitamin, calcium & D, B2, feverfew. No grocery stores with delivery here. I just really don't get that. I don't live in a big city - but I still think there would be enough demand for delivery. I'd surely be willing to pay extra for such a service. But I spoke with a friend and she offered to help me with the shopping. I really appreciate that offer. I just get overwhelmed a blue sometimes.

I totally understand where you are coming from, I do kickboxing running and snowboarding but I can't manage to do it regularly really. I have a practical suggestion about the shopping. Could you get it delivered to your house? I know this means you have to pick the items and do the ordering using a PC but this seems better than having to go out.

I am tired every day at the moment because I overuse triptans and other painkillers but it is the only way to make my headaches and migraines go when I want to do activities like kickboxing. Here is something really odd - when I go to snowboarding I never get a headache when I am there but during kickboxing and running sometimes one develops.

And I just realised someone already mentioned about delivering groceries!

I hope you figure things out soon. I know it can sometimes feel like things will never get better.
